A Strong Response

The AER takes serious action against Lexin Resources

After several months and many attempts to bring Lexin Resources Ltd. into compliance, the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) has issued a corporate closure order, suspending licences for all company wells, facilities, and pipelines—more than 1600 licences in total.

The AER has always had the authority to take measures like this against repetitive and hazardous noncompliances, but this is the first time we’ve applied our tools to a company with this number of licences.

The AER was forced to act, explains Closure and Liability Branch Senior Vice President Mark Taylor, due to “the size of the company, the scope of the noncompliances, Lexin’s disregard for the regulatory process, and the risk posed to the public and environment.”
