Gas Up for Summertime
Natural gas liquids are your secret summer companions
‘Tis the season for everything grilled—your steak, your veggies, and maybe even your skin if you forgot that SPF. With the exception of your sunburn, none of the grilling goodness that you enjoy would be possible without natural gas liquids (NGLs).
Here’s a quick overview of the four types of NGLs that are produced in Alberta and what happened to their production from 2015 to 2016:
- Ethane—used to help make a variety of plastic products and detergents; experienced a 0.6 per cent decline in production to 225.4 103 barrels per day (bbl/d).
- Propane—handy for searing salmon; saw a 5 per cent rise in production to 152.5 103 bbl/d.
- Butane—helpful when you need a flame; increased in production by 10 per cent to 93.8 103 bbl/d.
- Pentanes Plus—helps oil move through pipelines; experienced a 7 per cent increase in production to 201.4 103 bbl/d.
Whether you’re washing grass stains out of your clothes or singing songs around a campfire, NGLs are helping you make the most out of your summer.
