Leading the Way
AER CEO recognized for leadership
Typically, it’s the Alberta Energy Regulator’s (AER’s) job to grade others’ work against regulatory expectations and standards.
But tables turned this week, as the AER’s president and CEO Jim Ellis received top marks from the Alberta Chamber of Resources (ACR) for his contributions to the province’s resource development.
Today the ACR named Ellis its Resource Leader of the Year for 2016. The ACR notes that Ellis receives the award “in recognition of his outstanding leadership in establishing and enhancing the Alberta regulatory system.”
Ellis has led the AER since its launch in June 2013, implementing numerous initiatives to change and improve how Alberta’s energy resources are regulated. These include
- moving the province towards a single application, single decision approach;
- looking at how multiple development activities can affect a specific area and at the cumulative effects of those activities over time through area-based regulation;
- finding efficiencies in the regulatory system that have yielded hundreds of millions of dollars in savings to industry without compromising safety or the environment; and
- making the AER more transparent through efforts such as the compliance dashboard.
Ellis shares the ACR kudos with Audrey Poitras, president of the Métis Nation of Alberta, who received the 2016 Indigenous Leader of the Year award.
