They can be as small as a swimming pool or as big as a lake. Regardless, it’s up to the AER to make sure the structures that contain them are sound.

Most of the dams in the AER’s jurisdiction hold process fluids and tailings from mining operations—be it oil sands or coal—so a breach or failure could be a major concern. Watch the accompanying video to learn more about how we work to keep these dams safe.
